Overview

The Kind combines the best of both worlds with a salt-free softener and whole house water filter into one system. It is specifically designed to give you soft and healthy water from every tap in your house without the negative impact of salt and chemicals. 

I installed one of these systems to test the effectiveness, flow rate, and durability first hand. (See the install and review video below).

Note that with a salt-free softener, hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium are not completely removed but rather altered so they do not stick to your appliances.  So the actual “hardness” results will be a mix of qualitative observations in addition to the quantitative results.

How It Works

The Kind water filter and softener combo has three stages. It starts with water flowing through a premium 5-micron sediment filter.  This extra-large 20-inch pre-filter removes silt, dirt, rust, and other debris. It will cleanse the water and help extend the life of the carbon filter in the next stage.  

The high-performance Catalytic Activated Coconut Shell Carbon Block filter is highly effective at removing harmful contaminants commonly found in municipal water ^[1]. Its uniform pore structure increases water contact time with the carbon block. This further increases its ability to address hundreds of contaminants like:

How It Works

The Kind two-stage softening system starts with water pushing through the pleated 5-micron sediment filter.  This extra-large 20-inch filter removes silt, dirt, rust, and other debris. It is the first step to cleanse the water and help protect the salt-free softener cartridge in the next stage.  

The salt-free technology works through a process called Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC). Once hard water comes into contact with the eSoft media, the calcium and magnesium ions are altered. The end result is they are no longer able to stick to plumbing and appliances to cause scale buildup.

Kind Water System Installation

Installing the Kind water system is extremely easy thanks to its inline design. It contains only two connections, water-in and water-out. This means it is a DIY task that can be completed in under two hours.

We installed one of their filtration systems to test it out, and you can read the full install steps in our guide. Although a bypass is not necessary because the filter replacements are very fast, we set one up anyway.

All of the filtration systems come with an installation kit that includes all the components needed for a wall mount install. Furthermore, depending on your home, it is able to be set up both indoors and outdoors. And since it is not invasive like with tank-based models, you can even take it with you if you move.

Filter Replacements

The carbon block and sediment filters on the Kind water systems last 12 months before needing to be replaced. This is a long lifespan considering most cartridge-based options need replacing every 3 – 6 months. The salt-free softener cartridge never needs to be replaced, however. The total time to replace the filters is only 15 minutes or less.

For added savings, you can subscribe to the auto-ship program to get another 15% off. It’s a nice feature so you don’t have to keep track of your filter replacement cycle. The filters automatically show up at your doorstep once a year.

Here are the quick steps to replace the filter cartridges:

1. Turn Off Your Main Water Supply: Turn off the main water supply line to your home. Note, that if you have a bypass setup, you can turn this on so you don’t interrupt your home’s water needs.
2. Use Spanner Wrench To Loosen Cartridge Housing: Use the provided spanner wrench to loosen the filter housing. There will be water stored inside the housing, so it’s a good idea to place a 5-gallon bucket under the filter system to pour the water in.
3. Swap Out The Filter Cartridges: Remove the old filter cartridge that is inside the filter housing. You can also place this inside the 5-gallon bucket for now. Place the new filter cartridge inside the housing making sure it is straight and seated correctly. Check the o-ring that is on the top of the housing. You should replace the old o-ring with the new one provided and lubricate it so it does not crack.
4. Fasten The Filter Housing: Now that the new filter is in place and the o-ring replaced, you can secure the filter housing back onto the manifold. Hand-tighten it at first to make sure it is not cross-threaded. Once it is fastened all the way, used the spanner wrench to snug it up, but be careful not to overtighten.
5. Turn Back On Main Water Supply: Slowly turn back on the main water supply and check for any leaks around the filter. If there are no leaks, go ahead and turn the water supply on all the way. If you turned on a bypass at the beginning, make sure to turn that off now. And that’s it, you just replaced your filter!

Key Considerations For The Kind Systems

Here are some key factors to consider when you are looking for the best whole home filter or Salt-free softener.

• Hardness Level: Salt-free softeners work fantastic for city water sources with light or moderate hardness levels (less than 15 PPM of hardness). This is especially true in areas where ion exchange softeners are banned like certain parts of California. However, if your water supply has extremely hard water, a salt-based water softener will deliver the results you are looking for.
• Water Supply: The Kind Water System is designed specifically for city water contaminants. A specialized well water filtration system is more suitable if you have well water.
